it can be labelled as "bad taste" maybe... it surprised me nevertheless
No, no you can't, unless you do so illegally, which you can do in any country.

You have to pass a firearm eligibility check. By federal law that is required in every state now. Then you have to complete a background check. Combined, they take at least 8 days, if you are fast-tracked (e.g., already own a gun).
It depends on the state. The federal check takes maybe 15 minutes on a good day. (Unless your name is in the "do-not-allow" database, you pass the check.) The delay is the availability of the database, and the time it takes to fill out the tedious form. If there's some kind of mix-up with identification, it can take a few days.

In some states (including mine) the federal check is the only requirement for adults to buy a gun from a dealer. It is commonplace to go shopping for a gun and leave the store with it within the hour. If they have it in stock. They have trouble keeping some popular models in stock, so it's not unusual to wait a week or so if you're picky.

It's certainly not considered "bad taste" to buy guns where I come from.

I wouldn't say bad taste, I would say not necessary.

Also, it depends on what gun you are buying for how long the check takes.
