i was told the more water involved the harder it is to maintaine.
a beginner marine tank enthusiast should start with a smaller tank (empty of life forms) and run it for serveral months.as the water evaporates the salt does not...so you have to add dechlorinated water to your established waterline alot....its an everyday ,monitoring constantly kind of thing until the proper conditions are achieved in your biological filter....and until you have the knack of keeping the saline levels steady...powerheads create a ebb and flow like the tides...and the proper lighting is crucial to things like anenomes...most aquarium owners unbeknownst to them do not keep their aquariums right either..they just have "unsensitive" fish.i went to salt because i was told it was easier than keeping the Discus that i was doing at the time...their water had to be softened, made acidic...all that stuff...the water was totally atthe other end of the scale out of the tap than it needed to be when it went into the tank...had a generator for power outagges...big pain, but really beautiful!.
20-30 gallon with coral sand,a bio-filter dumping back through bio-wheels...for a month(s) before fish...that is what scares most people away or leads to their failure due to impatience to have fish.
if i lived by the actuall ocean i would have one ,water changes every other day from the ocean ould make it very easy :D

i'll tell you what...this isnt much easier!
i had to remove the waterfall..it kept leaking into the terrarium.
had a 1" waterline in the substrate...started over.
now i have a shallow pond instead.
took me a long time to find a affordable timer that would let me turn on/off my ultrasonic humidifier in less than i hour increments.
found one made by "Zilla"...its a power strip with a 15min. incremental timer built in....i keep the temp @ 75 F. withe an 80% humidity level..
right now the average humidity in my home is around 40%(frozen winterland here)..so it takes quite alot of water(filtered and dechlorinated)
my daughter got me 2 green tree frogs for my birthday...south american animals so its not so exotic..cheap starter frogs....they are doing pretty good...i gutload my crickets then dust them with vitamins before feeding them to the frogs...they are pretty boreing creatures but i am just using them to judge my abilities before i drop a bunch of money on something more exotic...my own little cubical of rainforest.... :D

steve, i'll check out my timer. i have an analog one that has a switch for each 30 min to turn on/off the device. my digital power strip has 4 regular, 2 night, and 2 day outlets. the times has 7 settings which are 100% customizeable. you can set each of the settings for either the day or the night outlets, and set a specific on and off times, down to the minute. i think it cost me $30. i'll see if i can find you an online link for it. otherwise maybe we can swap. my snakes just need an on/off at 6am/pm.

hey thanks!
i found one says "Zilla" on it allows me to turn on the humidifier once an hour for 15 minutes...i found if i set the humidifier on a low setting 15 min. is about right...i have a timer i bought thats digital but i think its more along the lines of what you need....i think it is a once on once off a day timer.....my green tree frogs are livinlarge at the moment...they are barking in the morning and eat all the crickets i offer....i am going to go a few more months before i try something more exotic (i.e. red eyed tree frog/poison dart frog).
i built another habitat for my daughters room...she is going to get a chamelleon..that should be interesting.
i run a sound machine all the time...rainforest crickets....
havent figured out why all the terrarium forum boards talk about growing orchids tho!....what are they doing with orchids?...its not like a poppy plant is it?..is it drug related?....
anyway its pretty darned cool...

Either place a piece of thin paper over the flash, or use a cigarette box over the flash to redirect and slow the light a bit in order to avoid white wash.

Alternatively, almost all cameras these days allow you to adjust settings so that the flash is sooner or delayed or less intense, and thus avoid white washing.

this is what fedex did to my terrarium!
thank God i was dealing with the American version of Revomaster.
www.thereptileking.com is another very honest upstanding website.
they have already shipped me a replacement terrarium.
i went to help my inlaws move into their new home ,cleaned the carpets...then my father inlaw had to go into the ER.
they said he wouldn't come out....he is feeling better but in bad shape....thats why i have been gone....we where at his bedside...i finally had to come home...the wife is still there...(ohio).....and when i got home this is what i found.
needless to say i was more than a little upset....but all is well now.

Quan :your puzzle is on its way brother...thanks again!

more to come :D
