Safe Cracking

Post by cdr2289 »

I figure while we wait (I'm one of the least patient people I know) we should come up with other uses for all this pent up revo-skill and revo-energy that is salient. My vote? Safe-Cracking. ... who better to open a safe by feel than those of we who've spent hours with these damn things? 8-) 8-) 8-)

Oceans 21 maybe ?

I must admit I have always been fascinated by safe cracking, the 'how' that is. You can buy a comprehensive set of lock picking tools for under $500 in the US but safe cracking is something else entirely, or at least that's how I have always thought of it.
Interesting though, another place, another time, another life...

Locks and bypassing them are nasty little hobbies of mine. Of course, some people make it too easy. A student at my lab locked her bike to a 1 meter vertical post in front of the building. I ran into her one morning, took her over to her bike and tried to explain why that might not be the most secure structure to which one could lock a bike. It never occurred to her that someone can simply lift the bike lock over the post!

It's not the most difficult thing in the world, but sitting down with a master lock and going through the 100 or so permutations can be quite soothing.

Safe cracking is nothing like in the movies. I use some pretty high level safes at work, and there is absolutely no feel to them at all. You're not getting into these things without the combo, or some high level equipment like a plasma cutter. Sorry :?

Agreed Stigy, but I have always thought that safe cracking included any way of breaking the safe, brute force or finesse. Granted modern safes are so well designed that brute force would probably be the only way to get in. But even that must take a certain amount of skill, prior knowledge and planning to get past the hinges/bolts/locking mechanism etc.
I suppose this is why people still write 'romantically' about safe or bank jobs. Maybe safe cracking is 'an' end result of our collective problem solving nature or maybe it is all about our collective lust for wealth.

Fair point; I fear we're at a distinct lack of "tess"able members on the forum. Just a guess, I could be mistaken. You all could be super hot supermodels. Sometimes in my dreams you .... wait ... am I still typing? Nevermind.
