Derren Brown is a supremely intelligent man. The fact that he makes no bones about his tricks being cases of misdirection doesn't make them seem any less imposible, or even less increadable, the thought and time that goes into each of them must be staggering.

the first rule of being a magician is to solemnly swear not to give away the tricks of the trade.
that being said...i know precisely how this is accomplished..it is by far not new...angel did it on the radio,Blaine does it in the street with scratch offs....i remember i saw one of those guys do that at a nascar race, guessed the finishing order ,locked in a metal case during the race.
My only regret in my extensive research of "magic" is i can no longer be where you are...the thing i miss most is the feeling you get when you realize you just saw "magic".
now that joy has been replaced by the feeling i can not describe when a child looks at you with "dreams in their eyes"....its true i try to scare and startle adults but i do not scare children i "enlighten" them, because if you truely believe in a fantasy,it becomes real...just ask Jim Hensen
Or Walt?
anyway....this trick is pretty creepy..the lottery one...but angel does the ghost pen trick at the graveyard..i have that trick..its "not cool"...i dont dabble much in dark magic it truely can "eff" someone up.
now do any of you truelly believe this man can guess the lottery numbers?....

No, no, no, no Steve!
Don't tar Derren Brown with the same brush. Derren openly admits (as he did before the lottery thing) that he has no physic powers at all. He says he uses 'a combination of suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship'. None of this spooky, black magic stuff.
don't know how it was done, but it must have been an incredible system.
Here is a news story on last night -

First thing is it is a trick! If it was not - he would be a fool not to take some of the largest payouts available.
I did not see him - so here is my view.
The white balls he used had printed numbers. There is flexible film TFT coupled with RF that can turn the ball into any number as long as the screen is facing backwards - the number is adjusted (by someone) transmitted and then displayed on the ball so when pointed forward reveal the right numbers. Same goes for the sign - did any one check? The pen may not have written anything, but stored on the system would be jpegs on each hand written number and again transmitted by someone as it happened.
Second thing is if it was true - we would have to close all lotteries as the "Random" element would disappear - so Camelot & the Gov would not be able to continue.
Like all magic tricks - it is the presentation that makes it (my favorite is Tommy Cooper who made a mess of the presentation to reveal a incredible trick of the eye).
Illusion is fantastic - close up slight of hand is something to experience but one thing is clear, there are very clever people out there.
One of my purchases was a glass plate from Light Fantastic - this had an early (before any foil types used on credit cards etc) hologram picture of a model car. With the right light, you can see through the windscreen, underneath and from behind. If the plate smashed, every piece would have a picture of the car!
Fantastic ....

i never meant to tarnish the man
i love magic...
i get this alot...."I saw Angel Do .......(always followed by a arrogant "lets see you do that" kind of look)(that one was the "coin matrix")and my boss saw blaine freak out a bunch of young bar hoppers...

so after that ,i learned Blaine's "ambitious card" routine and made the bent card jump to the top
then came The Amazing Jonathan...

unreal....i ate razor blades for the boss and stapled a card to my chest with a staple gun....
but can you believe this:i got a promotion at work for showing the owner the "svengali deck"

he called me the devil!
and that brings me full circle back to my point...when someone who is extra gullable sees the "wrong" trick, they question what they hold as "the rules" and it can actually be damaging to certain peoples psycology.
i dont do seances
i dont do "readings"
i know a "ghost in the room" routine that made my first "participant" bawl like a baby...not fun!
long winded again and maybe too opinionated....i study magic, and the effects of it on "watchers" as a kind of "human nature" self study course.
i am currently doing "frozen" from the ellusionist site.its a real good one.
if any of my friends here have an absolute fav trick they would like to learn let me know,i will teach you....if you promise to freak your friends out and not tell them
