4k is what it was before ...
To make something decent you need at least 20k and 90x90 is fine.
You need the extra k's for the frames in the Gif.

Most forums I inhabit have file sizes in the 100k mark .. but 20 will do for what I want to do.

edit ... sorry it was 6k before .. so you have actually made it smaller ?

Right, max is now 300x300 and file size is 90k. Hope it works!

I am not sure exactly how phpbbs works ... but I think a 300x300 avatar would look a little ridiculous.
It would take up half the page.
The filesize is the important thing.
