I guess its well known and prolly "old"... i just got my yot yesterday, solved it in like 15 minutes, BUT...
i had lots of fun watching my colleagues at work trying to open this damn thing
even when i opened it for them and let them take a look, they failed hard

such a nice little thing!
is there something comparable out there? (quick to solve but fun to see people failing?

)

Is the yot 2 worth it compared to the yot 1?
I have a yot one. Sad it didn't last long!

Hanayama makes a similar piece. Different design but same solution.

I personally wouldn't bother with the YOT II. It has the same solution with a slight addition, but I find the original YOT solution much more fun and elegant.
The solution to the YOT is known as one of the key rules of puzzling. Many many puzzles use the same solution, but I think the YOT does it especially well.

If you're thinking of the
Cast News then I'd say the solution is pretty significantly different and still well worth having in a collection.

Yup. The News is a devious little puzzle designed to trip over those who knew this kind of concept very well.

Yeah that's the one. I know it's different but still very similar. NEWS is one of my favorites but it ruined the YOT for me =P (I've even tried using the method on a few of the revo's I actually possess right now to no avail... If It's not in any, it'd make a deviously cool addition!)

Same here. I received the YOT after I solved the NEWS from Hanayama. So wasn't that hard, but still like it for it it's design!

The YOT was THE first mechanical puzzle I bought, sometime around 1995 I think! A year or so later, I picked up the YOT II. Then a long break of well over 14 years before I started again, collecting puzzles and blogging. Looking back, I must say the mechanism then was rather amazing, not to mention the excellent quality of construction for both puzzles.
I understand there is also a Gold Plated version?
