Re: The Petaminx

Oooh! I really want one of those! It actually looks even better scrambled!
I showed it to Mrs S and started to drool!
I don't think the water in the drool is enough to put out the fire on my forehead!
Can anyone else smell burning??

Re: The Petaminx
Being scrambled has done it for me too!!!
It doesn't even need to be solved to gain its place back on the shelf, I looks better unsolved.
don't buy it Ali. ?

Phase 1 is complete. I have the circle of 10 pieces that surround each of the 12 centers in place.

Re: The Petaminx
Here is my next status update as I am working on the 2nd ring of pieces around each center on each face. It doesn't look too different from last time but notice that all of the 3 piece groups (a center and 2 wings) next to the solved first ring of pieces are grouped together (just not in their solved positions). My next step move these grouped pieces into their solved position and then solve this ring's corner pieces.
My approach for large puzzles like this is to reduce the puzzle down to a simpler/smaller one. I do that by first solving the faces by working from the center outwards, one "ring" of pieces at a time.

Re: The Petaminx
This is generally my approach for larger puzzles. The good thing here is that because it is an odd order puzzle to start with and you are reducing to another odd order then you don't get any parity issues (like you get in a 4x4 or 6x6 cube).stet wrote:My approach for large puzzles like this is to reduce the puzzle down to a simpler/smaller one. The bad thing is that you don't get any interesting parities as these make an arduous long haul much more interesting. Maybe you should try the Master kilominx (4x4 equivalent) next or even better a shapeways produced Elite kilominx (6x6))
