The problem with auctions is that in many cases people can forget about the item and simply want to beat someone else. That's why these items don't end up in the collections of the most appreciative, but tend to end up with the people with the largest wallets.Barcared wrote:Just been outbid on 11 items! Can't believe some of the prices! Is it me or does something seem odd about these auctions or are puzzle collectors just really rich?

...I've noticed that prices tend to be higher on Nick's auctions for some reason...
I can't remember ever seeing something I thought was a bargain at one of the Baxter auctions - may be a reflection of the clientele bidding on there as opposed to the other auctions - just my theory...

It is odd that these rich collectors don't seem to be part of a community sharing their puzzles or their experiences of the puzzles! It may be that they buy to own rather than to use and share. Sad really, as they are basically toys to be played with!
Still one or two items I am interested in which have had little interest but the main items are now well over my head.

Re: It's BAXTERWEB time!
Tri Again has now sadly gone above my limit. So I'm out of this one.
I'll win something at auction one day.

Re: It's BAXTERWEB time!
I was bidding on a few items as well and I'm out as well...this auction must be a joke! Who drops that kind of cash on puzzles?!
I offer up the Bar of Chocolate as an example; est value $300 and going for more than 10X that price.

Re: It's BAXTERWEB time!
A few of us have decided that the missing piece of the Da Vinci Code must be inside that Chocolate Bar. At least that's the only way we can justify someone spending that much cash on it.mattangel wrote: I offer up the Bar of Chocolate as an example; est value $300 and going for more than 10X that price.
Anyway, auction finishes tonight, so I look forward to hearing later that someone I actually know managed to win something from it.

I was amazed to see how many lots blew out of all proportion over night... Perpetual Hinge included. Rob's kumiki elephant is staggering considering that the Little Game Hunter Box was available for significantly less than that for a little while a couple of weeks back - and some of those Wausau burrs are going for more than Bill has them listed on his site at the moment ... rather odd!

It's a shame that it is all anonymous - I would love to know who paid so much and got MY puzzles!
