You know those low metal baking trays used for making cookies and tarts? Can't remember any of them being square. Just saying... ;)

I found a nice symmetrical solution with only 2 squares symmetrically extending the 5x5 space (and 2 holes inside the 5x5). All cherries remain inside the 5x5 space. There are at least 2 possible arrangements for the cherries in a 5x5 space.
The pieces are correct by the way.

Yes there are 2 different ways of having the cherries set symmetrically, but 1 way can definitely not be used to arrange the puzzle in such a way that all pieces are in the box. The other way ive yet to get a definite no on :?

When the cherries include the corners and alternate around the perimeter of the 5x5 square, that's a mess. In the other configuration there are at least two solutions which fit in a 5x7 rectangle and a-maze-ing's has fewer squares outside the 5x5 area than my initial solution did. Still not a really satisfying solution.

Perhaps it's a multilayered three dimensional solution. You wouldn't want us to wait 11 years too, would you? ;)

Yes, the pieces fit into the tray 5x5, not multi-layered but flat.
I will post a photo later, I'll let you search the solution a while longer.
Writing here about thinking outside the box helped me to find the solution,
And I think you need the actual wood puzzle to find the solution, cutting out the puzzle in paper will not work.

But are the cherries all facing upward still and not to the side?
