Well, degreaser did nothing to fix the friction issue. It was worse than coating the threads with wax which at least provided some resistance but didn't lock up the nut when trying to remove it from the bolt.

I thought a glue stick might work, but it just laughed at it.

I know there wasn't anything like loctite on the puzzle initially. It didn't seem stickky like glue. It felt dry to the touch. I think I'll try a little nail polish to the threads and let it dry before reassembling. At least I could use acetone to remove the polish if it doesn't work.

I've decided that before I spend more than the puzzles worth I should just buy another one. The added benefit is that I ordered another $40 of puzzles to get free shipping. Pretty thrifty.

The clear nail polish works perfectly. I put the polish on the external threads of the part that needs friction to make the puzzle work as a puzzle and that made it difficult to remove the nut. The second coat made it almost impossible to remove the nut without knowing the puzzles trick. A third coat would probably make to puzzle to difficult to open even if you know the trick.
