Crucial? I would disagree, I only mapped a small part of the Silver, all other mazes I solved without any mapping at all. I find repeating sections until you know them really well is the best method. However if you do feel the need to map the blue, accuracy is not essential. Really you can get away with very rough, not to scale maps until the bronze IMO.

Maps DO give you a different picture of the puzzle than doing it by memory. Some people find that useful, some not so much. I'm a part of the latter, I don't map much outside of memory. It's not a part of the puzzle solving that I enjoy.
